I’m trying to make canvases that, in addition to having different colors, make the lighter edges darker or vice versa… could you please help me?

I use rims I have made and shadows most of the time. And I use a shaded round element with 15-30% opacity on top of the background layer, which is either a plain color, metal or other background.
This is my main rim. Sometimes I make it a bit larger on the watch face for a thin rim:
This is the shadow I use a lot behind the rim (varying the size…):

I also use this shadow for depth.
I used it on one of my early days watch face for the outside as well as the small dials. It does not have many pictures in it at all:
