Copyright Issues

I had a watch removed for copyright infringement for the first time. I used the word “halo” in the keywords and it turns out it is copyrighted under Microsoft. Who knew. I had no idea. It was for an angel halo.
It was taken down immediately. My mistake is that I had not duplicated it. So I had to re do the design and leave out the word halo.
So lesson learned… before I publish, I duplicate the face. I do duplicate my faces, but usually after I publish.
Also…
I get requests to create faces that contain a Disney or another copyrighted cartoon character. I know that there may be some characters that are public domain but most aren’t.
I have stayed way from using copyrighted material on faces and I don’t really want to start.
I am just curious, what is everyone’s opinion on using copyrighted material? How do you handle that with requests?
And
How are people publishing copyrighted material, using copyrighted words in the description and the face stays live? I just saw someone publish a watch that says Disney in the description.

Thanks.

Hi Beth,
I had a design removed last Christmas that had an angel and a halo on it. It was restored, but as you said, “Who knew.”
The way I see it all copyrighted material is off limits. Disney has a policy on that. I don’t have time to research what is now in public domain. Fortunately, Disney has a way to contact them. Welcome to The Walt Disney Studios Licensing Website
I get a lot of requests. If someone insists on my using an image or logo that might be registered or copyrighted I usually explain my concern and ask them to contact the company so they can let me know about permission. I’ve never had anyone reply to that. They usually just ask one of the people who doesn’t care - which to me speaks volumes as to their character. There are a lot of people in this world who will do whatever they can get away with. That doesn’t make it right.

We maintain a list of copyright infringements. “Halo” is actually on there.

I have to confess I do not check the List before I publish something . But it is interesting to have it there and look through now and again .

I am with you Russel. I saved the link but whether I will refer to it in the future is the question.

Hi. I’ve been trying for a few days to publish this screenshot below, and some others that are blocked. I’ve filed appeals, but it still doesn’t work.
Today I published Wear OS. The screenshot was accepted and works perfectly in WFF.

Could someone please give me some guidance? CAF

I agree with you. I had to explain this to someone and they said there are ways to get around it. But I told them I was not comfortable with that. I usually want to create a face for someone when requested, but not in this case. I felt bad, so I just wondered how others handled it. Yes… there are many creators that will create the copyrighted material for them. I just don’t want to do that.
I do not create my own artwork like some of you. I may use my photography but otherwise I License with Canva or use an AI generated image. I started creating faces for my own personal use and, well, I just started adding more and more faces to my collections. Creating faces is a lot of fun for me and I enjoy the creative process. I never meant it to become 100’s of faces.
But without this community and the help everyone provides, I would not have some of the codes, weather icons or watch hands I use. I am so grateful for that.
I do have Creator Pro and I want to have the option to offer Pro features, but most of my faces are free out of simplicity. I plan on adding more pro features in the future.
Thanks so much for your feedback. -Beth

That’s a cool watch face. The only thing I’ve learned is to always create a duplicate before you publish so that you don’t have to start completely over again.-Beth

Thank you. I created it with the help of various teachings from the community. But I’m disappointed with Facer because it only accepted the post when I didn’t click on WFF, even though it works!!! I don’t understand anything!!! CF

Do not feel bad about not fulfilling wishes, that make you uncomfortable. Eventually such face may be removed later or straight at publishing and it would ruin your fun in making the face.

Did you check to see if the date is compatible with WFF? Check here:
