Is it possible to take one of my designs, make a tweak and save it as a new design rather than a new version. Keeping the original design/version intact?
You can make a duplicate of your existing designs and edit it, preserving the source copy.

What are the steps for doing that?
On the Creator ‘overview’ page showing all your designs, click the … next to the Edit button for the face you want to duplicate and choose ‘duplicate’ in the drop down menu.
Done.
You still need to set a new name for the duplicated face though and edit it as required (same procedure as for creating a new face from scratch).
