GAK! Latest firmware update deleted Facer & it's faces

I just updated my Galaxy 6 Classic to the latest software (Version 8?) The update took quite a long time but did finish OK. I had to power the watch off and on to get Facer and my Facer face to load - but they did.

Later I put the watch on it’s charger and charged it to 100%. WHen it came back Facer was gone, along with all Facer faces. Instead I got the default green & white face. So now I have to go throught the whole Facer reload and then reload my faces.

Grrrrrr.

Here is the result of a Google/AI search on how to recover:

Showing results for how to enable facer on galaxy watch 6 with one ui version 8 and wear os 6

Search instead for how to enable facer on galaxy watch 6 withone ui version 8 and wear os 6

To enable Facer on your Galaxy Watch 6 with One UI 8 Watch (based on Wear OS 6), ensure your watch has received the stable One UI 8 Watch update, which is now rolling out globally. Once updated, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Facer app on your paired smartphone from the Google Play Store.
  2. On your Galaxy Watch 6, go to Settings > About > Software and tap “Software version” seven times to enable Developer Mode.
  3. Install the Facer app directly on your watch by opening the Galaxy Store on your watch and searching for Facer, or by using the Facer companion link on your phone.
  4. After installation, ensure the Facer logo face is set as your current watch face by long-pressing the watch face and selecting Facer from the list.
  5. With the Facer face active, sync your desired watch faces from the Facer app on your phone. The Watch Face Push API in Wear OS 6 allows approved third-party apps like Facer to push a single face to your watch’s favorites menu.

This failed at step #4 because the Facer app (or the Facer default face) never showed up on the list of available faces.

I am quite disturbed…

I tried clearing the watch’s cache, but that failed too. This web page tells how that is supposed to work:

but it fails at step #2 which is the one that is supposed to load the Reboot menu. This menu never loads - instead the watch just restarts and loads one of the (ugly) default Samsung faces.

Years ago I made my face with the old Galaxy Watch Developer software - which is no longer available. It took me a month to get through all the looney Samsung permissions etc. When I got so annoyed with all that I switched to Facer and got the watchface recreated in about 3 hours.

I had hoped I’d never have to go back to any Samsung software, but I’m beginning to think this latest firmware update may have killed Facer. I sure hope I’m wrong about that.

It’s on WearOS 6 OneUI 8 now. Only WFF compatible faces will work now. If legacy faces have not been updated to be WFF compatible, they won’t work anymore. I’ve been using it on my 6 Classic with WearOS 6 for a few months now (I was in the Beta Program). The current Facer Watch App version is 7.0.59_11143304.

Maybe submit a ticket with Facer to get the app stuff figured out.

I got the message - thanks for confirming my worst fears. Truth is I have little faith that a trouble ticket will help fix this problem any faster than doing nothing. I’m starting to think my best bet might be to go back to GWS (or whatever it is called now) and recreate the face in native Samsung format.

I did get this far after a fair amount of fussing:

Of course I have no idea what “Inactive” means or how to go about changing that status to Active - or whatever will allow the face to get loaded.

Maybe I can find a way to go back to WearOS 6. <=== WRONG!

From another Google search:

There is no official method to revert from Wear OS 6 (which is part of One UI 8 Watch) back to an earlier version of Wear OS on the Galaxy Watch 6.

There are no known reliable methods or tools to revert to Wear OS 6 or any previous version.

PS: I finally found out how to clear cache on WearOS 8 - it did not help.

You would have to revert to wearOS 4.
v5 does not support Facer at all

Right, but that’s not possible. So I’ve been doing some preliminary work with the official Samsung Watch Face Studio (WFS) to reconstruct my face. So far that’s been a total loss because the mechanism it uses to upload a face simply does not work.

Plus (of course) it is quite crude compared to Facer.

You should check in at the WFS conmunity There are many topics on Running your file on your watch . It is not appropriate here . Both platforms have stuff the other has not at the moment . I love storing my WFS Faces on my System not the cloud .

Hi Russell - it’s 1:45AM here but I’ve managed to get a working face up on my watch:

It’s ugly and certainly not something I like very much, but it’s on the right track.

The options for face objects in GWS are far fewer than those in Facer, so I’m going to have to copy a bunch of things (hands, indexes) from postings here. GWS also has no weather data that I’ve been able to find. But the heartrate data seems to be working much better in terms of real time values.

I am (now) back on the GWS message board, even though I swore years ago that I’d never go back. Oh well - here’s hoping this looney situation doesn’t put Facer out of business. My guess is that is exactly the motivation the WearOS people had when they made this incompatability.

Oh Well done . Show us a shot of the face on your watch . For GWS do you mean WFS ?

This is as much as I’ve done so far. It’s quite ugly and amateurish, but at least I’ve figured out how to upload a face to my watch.

I was surprised at how limited and awkward this design software is compare to Facer. But it is what it is.

I LOVE IT . I am getting a bit fed up with the stock hands . I have seen Publications on Google Store with them . I cannot believe people put Zero effort Faces up on Google . They must have got the easy in Pass.
Only thing missing on that face is a Battery Gauge . You should publish it here on Facer . I think you would be surprised .

Ditto - I found these hands in one of the postings here, so now my WFS face looks like this:

I’ve tried adding the current weather temperature, but nothing I’ve tried so far works. Even the Samsung sample faces that include a temperature function don’t work. So I’m thinking my Galaxy 6 Classic is just not compatible with the temperature function.

Remind me is your GW6 Updated or are you trying to avoid that .

Yes - I updated to WearOS 8 about a month ago. And of course after doing that I found out there is no way to go back.

What’s WearOS 8 like? We’re all stuck with WearOS 6/OneUI 8.

WearOS 8 works, but it will not allow faces created with Facer to work. So I got the Samsung Watch Face Studio app and rebuilt my face with that. It looks to me like Google is trying to put Facer out of business.

What year did you travel back in time from?

Oops! I meant to say Wear OS 6 and One UI 8. There’s also something called System Version 16 - whatever that is. Oh…FYI the Watch software update option in Galaxy Wearable Watch Settings is now greyed out/dimmed/not selectable.

Seems like have now lost all control over our watch software & firmware.
