I would suggest to use the first version with the numbers as pictures, like this (open for inspection):

I found a better way to do this (in WFS, that is). No images.

I created text boxes, grouped them together, and move the groups up and down with a tag expression. You can change the font, font size, etc without dealing with creating images. It also appears to be much smoother. I’m thinking there’s less math with vector graphics (the way fonts are constructed) than with bitmaps when it comes to animation.
