Overlapping functionalities and dedication

Hi everybody.

I like to kick off a discussion about this theme and love the interaction on that.

The reason for this is that looking at my time as face maker i came to some insights and evolved based on that, like probably anyone else. And it brought me a lot of fun, mostly, with ever growing knowledge.

I am eager to learn, never avoid a challenge, face it to say it in Facer terminology.

Some aspects of that put in the center, what do i want to do here and what does a face needs to have and more important for me, what not. I am now more focusing on what not.

For that i must respect that, especially on data level, other technologies provide better solutions. For example voice commands, including other electronics like phones and their evolution in relation to watches and tiles, evolutions in watch software. How nice is it to enter a destination via voice in your car or interacting via voice with phone and watch.

Why would i include data in a face, that can be better, faster given via voice commands, even on my phone or watch. Why would i include data, if they are presented in perhaps a better, structured way, interconnected, via tiles which i can customize. I can imagine, you could use both and if that is the case, why should i include that data still in a face. Furthermore, because battery matters, why not use sleeping tiles instead of always on monitoring data via face.

And if we would avoid overlapping, would there be not more place for creativity, regarding the small factoring which remains on watch with for me, too low resolution. Would it not be better to dedicate space to creativity, meaning for me beauty whatever that is for you, adding emotion and identity to a face instead of duplicating data and even impacting battery.

Overlapping is for me a important theme because i am also confronted when for example buying a TV, which have speakers on it, sadly. Because nothings beats sound via my hifi system. Still i am paying for that overkill, unwanted overlapping. Modular concepts are often left out. I build my hifi previous on all including concepts, now i only in for best of breed and of course cables…

I thought this would be a nice playground to exchange thoughts, insights.

I am afraid you can not avoid ā€œoverlappingā€, at least between two separate devices.

Let me use your example. When I needed new TV set, it was back in time when there was standard the built in analog tuner, but there was also few new for digital broadcasting over cable mimicking the earlier introduced over satelite, yet providers in most cases degraded your modern TV into a monitor, because they offered their set-top-box, which would decode signal and switch channels.

In this manner, the watch could be simply a display, a receiver station with sensors and all the data collecting and computing would provide the phone on your belt, saving the small battery on wrist for the display and sensors alone. Maybe I am oversimplyfying it, but what I do not want in watch is AI to talk with and eat up resources, when it can (and often already does) run on phone. I have watch to look at, not to talk with.

I do understand people who want to go out light, when the watch can even provide cellular connection, but that is something I would call nice to have and backup solution. The same goes for maps, navigation and GPS. It all does phone better, but I can not remember smartwatch, that would rely on paired phone GPS. All brag about the few hours they can run it.

There is also time displaying on your phone, it has nice big screen to display graphic effects. That is why many people stopped using watch as time-only device at all.

I want as much info as I can have at a glance. I hate talking to my technology, especially in public. I can’t even stand to see other people doing it. I’ll never ask my watch what my Blood Glucose reading is in public, or at home for that matter. A Smart watch should be smart. I like to create mega info (lots of fixed complications, and customizable complication slots) faces that look beautiful. A beautiful dashboard if you will. Just being pretty doesn’t even come close to cutting it for me.

I agree with you on the other overlap tho. I makes me mad that I can’t buy a ā€œnot smartā€ high end OLED TV. I use FireSticks on all of my TVs (I have a lot of TVs). That way, the remotes are all the same, and the setup and usage is all the same. Why are they forcing the ā€œsmartā€ part on us? As far as the speakers go, that’s probably an extra $2 for the manufacturer. The speakers in my phone sound better. I do have a 21 year old Samsung 40" LCD that has great sound. Back then they still put real speakers in them.

My sentiment exactly.
On other hand, since I am using smartwatch, I have even my phone set to quiet vibration only, the watch notifies me better.

I also do not talk to technology aloud. I find it pretentious and embarrassing, but I am an old codger. I feel though that younger people who have grown up with and those behind them have no trouble engaging with technology like that.
