The dangers of being a dinosaur

In my youth computers hadn’t been invented so it was with some trepidation that i decided to move all my Facer stuff up to Google’s cloud - would it all arrive in one piece and where exactly is this cloud! However, all went well and it landed where it was supposed too - including the index to my watchfaces.
Today I realised that I had a problem and despite my success I hadn’t realised that MSWord still pointed to the local copy of the watch index - which I had used intermittently with the one up there somewhere! The end result is duplicate references which I have now corrected. OK that was a long story but the moral is ‘always be aware of where you are saving stuff’ especially if you, like me, are a bit of a digital dinosaur!

Do you pay for your Cloud Storage ? I must try educate myself. I do keep some stuff there but am reluctant to give all my Pictures to Google to look after . I have quite a lot of watch Face stuff now.

I’m paying for Google Drive, 100GB of storage, 2.46 USD.

Everything that’s important to me is backuped there.

If you stop paying for one resson or another do you lose your stuff or is there some sort of sabatical period before it gets wiped ?

I really don’t know… I guess they will warn you and then delete it.

I’m not sure but I think 5GB storage is free of charge.

Yeah I use Google and One Drve free . I rely on the 2Tb Hard Drive out of a Sky Box for Backup.:blush:

Cloud backup is better, I can reach for a file I need from phone, home computer, laptop…

For movies and music hard drive backup is good enough.

At the moment I’m using the free 15Gb (Google drive) and to be honest I like it, I like the freedom it gives to use it on my PC or laptop. It’s synchronised with my PC (now). I have at least 6 usb sticks and here’s the point I had until recently 7, the seventh one, the oldest one, stopped working. Luckily it was a small one, however, i have no idea what was on it! So my reasoning is this do I trust Google enough to keep my data safe or do I risk losing data on USB’s? I have also had a hard drive pack up on me so it’s a no brainer really - i have to trust Google!

Yeah. The Bonus is they deal with Viruses . Sadly not Covid.:+1:

What to you guys mean by “Facer stuff”?
I have various notes and expressions stored in text files (for reference) and backed up, but not detailed or indexed by face.
The Facer servers hold the only true copy of my watch faces. This does make me a bit uncomfortable.
Is there an easy way to download a “source file” of some sort for a Facer watch face?

Sadly no. You have to Emigrate to WFS to Store your Face Files on your own Hard Drive. I think your Face Designs are safe on the Facer Server. As long as you dont annoy Marvin Too much. The Stuff the Guys are talking about is their Graphics and Formulas.

Thanks @russellcresser

I am sure Facer does keep backups like any cloud provider and should Facer close down, there is no point in having the “face files” in any case.

It is Marvin going rouge that I am worried about! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

It would still be very handy to be able to download a text based (XML, JSON etc) file that describes the layer structure of a face, including all the properties and values for each layer. Graphics excluded, although the name of the graphic file attached to each layer would be nice. If you use descriptive layer names, that could even be sufficient to identify the required graphic file.

I have backups of backups locally for my artwork and Facer notes. Had a bad experience with cloud a few years ago. Fortunately, my local backups saved me, but I never trusted cloud for PhotoShop files or any type of image files again.
