Two year ago I bought a DIY watch kit to assemble yourself. The mechanical movement itself came in one piece (thankfully!). I thought it would be fun to assemble a watch.
Well, to be honest it was a lot harder than I thought. Especially the hands. More than once, I was searching the floor to find one that flew off. They did come in a sets of two, but managed not to lose or break one. My eyesight not being the best, I found it tiring and definitely not an easy thing to assemble.
The DIY kit is very nicely made and the GMT watch I bought looks great. Meanwhile they have a number of other models as well.
Anyway, my tribute to the mechanical watch makers, a craft which I will most likely not pursue any further:
Nice, I like almost every variation of these scuba related watches. Now you planted such a persistent idea in my mind. I already treated my self with new smartwatch this year in advance, but this kit will definitely land high on my wish-list to my 50 in fall.
I added special dial movement. The day of the week and day of the month start to rotate 1 minute and 15 minutes before the day ends. I left the original dials in the face without that for those who want to inspect it…
I put together this wooden clock from a kit of laser cut wooden sheets. Still keeps time reasonably well. Goes for 12 hours. I did have to replace the elastic band that held the ratcheting drum the weight wraps around, luckily without having to take the clock apart.
Loosing bits. Yes. I was replacing a watch battery and the one screw that held down a metal tab that kept the battery in sprang out by surprise. Took a large magnet to find it on the carpet.
