In mechanical watch world the Perpetual Calendar is often thought of as the ultimate watchmaking achievement. There is such an incredible amount of planning and engineering that goes into making the complications. Unlike a regular date or day/date which has to be be adjusted for every month that isn’t 31 days, or an annual calendar that needs, well… annual adjustment. The perpetual calendar takes into account months of different lengths, leap year, lunar cycle, etc… to almost never need adjusting so long as the power reserve isn’t allowed to run out. Every major watch brand and many of the top independent makers offer perpetual calendars. I love seeing how different makers design the layout with so much information. These are the smart watches of the mechanical watch world. They are almost always among the most expensive, and they are also usually my favorite of all watches.
Thank goodness we have it easy in watch face world. We don’t have to spend years developing the gear ratios and calculating all the math to get this information on our designs. But the layout is every bit as much of a challenge and opportunity and is much fun!
