I’m trying to up my game a bit in the graphics department & experimenting with metallizing some old designs to update them. I’ve still got a ways to go, but here’s a first start. At this time, shadows & reflections are simpler done within Facer Creator. I hope to figure out how to do them in a graphics program soon. Any feedback is welcome.
These are cool, but a little Jurassic Park to me. By that 'm referring to the quote " Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should."
What I mean is that you’ve got so much great stuff going on in both of these faces, that it’s masked by all of the other great stuff going on in both of these faces.
Sometimes you can solidify a design with color, sometimes with fonts, sometimes content. It’s up to you to decide which, but for example, on the bottom face you’ve got the cool seconds complication you developed, but its hard to focus on it with all of the other elements and colors going on.
If you want the focus to be on the seconds area, you can force the eye to it a couple of different ways. Either by removing some of the other data and replacing it with more simple content like dial numbers or ticks, or even just simplified versions of the current content (like maybe just todays weather instead of a weekly forecast).
Another way to do it is by limiting your colors. Since you’ve got a hint of blue in your new metal texture, maybe just use shades of blue for your data.
Additionally, you can use the same font for all data. By using the same font, everything has a cohesive look and you can determine the level of importance by making different data text either larger or brighter.
A good tip is, if everything looks the same, the one thing that’s different, is the one thing people will look at. So if all your content was dark except for the date or whatever, then that’s where everyones eye is going to go first.
So anyway, these are both super cool, tons of cool stuff you guys are doing with what you have. But if you come up with a cool complication, like the seconds thing you have here, then make that the hero. Make it so that THAT is the thing that everyone looks at when they see the face.
My opinion only of course, but for the Big Seconds Wheel Metal, I’d leave the seconds and the digital time (maybe make the digital time use the same font as the seconds) and delete the rest. Instead, fill the background with your metal texture, add some nice hands, some ticks, a date hole and maybe a few numbers. Cause the seconds are the hero there!
Sorry man, I kinda rambled on ya lol.
Thanks @Rator , very good feedback. Yes, I know sometimes (ok, lots of times) I try to cram way to much into my designs. I like your line:
But if you come up with a cool complication, like the seconds thing you have here, then make that the hero. Make it so that THAT is the thing that everyone looks at when they see the face.
Will work on it.
F*** Yeah! Go kill it man!
Love the big seconds wheel
