This one morphed, but the whole thing covered some of the big problems with facer -

I always sayā€¦ the popularity is inversely proportional to the amount of work you put in to designing a face.

My most popular face, in fact, most popular series, is something I contributed exactly two graphical elements - a sunrise and a sunset icon. Everything else is text or Facer built in functionality. Itā€™s not something I would wear, and I really hate it. People go nuts for it. Iā€™d rather spend time working on something I enjoy designingā€¦ something I want to wear, something that was a challenge, and something which has some kind of clever elements going on (clever is relative  ).

I feel the same.

I actually only do the complex things for myself in order to have done them.
And to prevent accusations, I do this as a ā€œwork in progressā€

Someone mentioned this a long time ago, and at the time I thought it was just conspiracy theory, but now Iā€™m pretty convinced that Facer interferes with visibility, chart likelihood, and sync likelihood. I doubt that they manipulate the charts themselves (beyond their stupid rules for inclusion in the chart - another thing thatā€™s not documented!), or manipulate sync numbers, but I do think they interfere with visibility. The way that the floodgates can open and close on a dime, is just too bizarre to be natural. And of course there are other ways that users themselves manipulate the charts.

I was just thinking of Posting something a bit near the Mark . Wondering if the face I have in the Charts at the moment would disappear ???

Iā€™ve tried ā€œC4SIOā€, and that was close enough to delete my watch faceā€¦

I understand the need for such controls.
But you canā€™t rely on bots on this difficult subject.
Such controls still have to be done by humans.

Oddly enough, I have used CASINO and never had a problem. I guess itā€™s just enough different that it flies under the bot radar.

How so?

I deleted all my screenshots when I stopped caring about it. Also not getting into it with an FCP.

Facer is in the US. They have to follow US copyright and trademark laws.

I just came across the photo of an interesting vintage hybrid watch, noticed it uses the same hour hand design that is being called a Rolex design in this thread, and I remembered reading this post but could not remember where it wasā€¦ had to scramble to find it.

Then I kept searching, and came across generic replacement hands being sold by this very well-known supplier of jewelry findings and tools. Same design, ā€œMercedes styleā€ is what they call theirs.

So is it really a protected design? And, will it cause issues publishing here?

To avoid such questions and problems, just create your own theme.
No matter how good a copy is, itā€™s always a copy.

Itā€™s cooler to make your own anyway.

It doesnā€™t matter how long it takes, the result counts
do something of your own and be proud of it, no matter what others say.

The watch is interesting, has nice tech look, but I would not describe it as vintage. Vintage is the name placed on it. I was not sure when, but wikipedia told me, the company ceased their activity, before the LCDs were introduced.
ā€œThe company discontinued all US manufacturing in 1968 and sold the rights to the name ā€œElginā€, which were subsequently resold multiple times over the years. The rights eventually were purchased by MZ Berger Inc., which manufactures its watches in China and distributes them outside traditional watch dealerships. Elgin-branded watches produced after 1968 have no connection to the Elgin Watch Company.ā€

In my estimation, it takes 2 things to do this gig: 1) creative talent ā€“ to come up with and create the essence of designs, and 2) implementation talent ā€“ to mechanically implement the aforementioned designs using various tools. I have some #2 but not much #1-- Iā€™m not as creatively talented as you and most everyone else on here. Which is why I thought I would just (mostly) stick to recreating vintage and antique faces for those who admire such gems. But I do have a few original designs as well.

Maybe not, but, the meaning of ā€œvintageā€ seems to be in the eye of the beholder: some say it must be at least 40 years old, some say 30, and the website of the infamous Bob Villa says between 20 and 99 years old. This piece is from 1990ā€™s so, who knows.

In any case, my point was about that hour hand, and whether itā€™s Rolex or Mercedes-- or generic.

Do not be fooled.
Iā€™m not particularly creative, in the truest sense.
But when I see things, no matter where or what, I just use this design differently.
The coke bottle also has nice details that can be used for other things.
Everything else is just practice and observation.

Vintage is also something different for me.
I love and collect vintage furniture, lamps and accessories.
Most is from 20s - 80s.

Iā€™m not knowledgeable enough to answer the question correctly.
but basically i donā€™t think itā€™s good when designers or manufacturers copy.
And it doesnā€™t matter who made the original design.

I also use a lot of well-known things as inspiration.
but I just want to create something of my own.

True. What I wanted to point out, is that if they dont mind to brag about transfered name, they wont think twice to use any possible ā€œgenericā€ hands or other parts.
